How can I fix my wooden fireplace? It has a large burnt mark on it!!?

I left a candle burning on my mantle of my fireplace and I fell asleep ( Not a good idea I know!) and I woke up to find it had burnt a 1cm deep groove in my fireplace and its about the size of my hand outstretched! Help! What can I do to solve this?
