Files won't delete off osx desktop?

i have two files on the desktop of my mac osx. they are both .dmg files. i have tried deleting them, but every time i reopen firefox, they reappear. they are apparently in the trash can right now but it won't let me permanently delete them as it says they are in use. what can i do?
